The old Keiki O Ka Aina campus.
Aging buildings that leaked and rotted from the years of exposure to the moist wet climate of Kalihi Valley, were the initial home of Keiki O Ka Aina. Plans were to renovate and rebuild on the land to remove the buildings and accommodate educational and training facilities. However, the agency was looking at years of fund-raising.

Extreme Makeover | Home Edition and Brookfield Homes Hawaii removed the old buildings and placed the new Akana home in the big open space along with a two-story community center building in the location of the previous main office building. Accommodations were made for a natural spring that was on the property that will supply water to a loi (taro patch) with the remaining open area dedicated to an outdoor classroom of indigenous Hawaiian plants. All in just one week!
