Keiki O Ka Aina Recipient of Donation to Build Traditional Hawaiian Hale
HONOLULU, HAWAII – November 6, 2012
Keiki O Ka Aina is making an extreme addition to the landscape of Kalihi Valley in record time. Keiki O Ka Aina (KOKA) is the honored recipient of this year’s Softcat donation, funding an authentic and traditional Hawaiian hale on the KOKA property. Softcat, a leading United Kingdom IT reseller, identifies a charity to sponsor with their time and funds each year. The hale project will further KOKA’s aspirations to become a true cultural learning center, helping local families connect with their Hawaiian heritage.
“We are grateful for the opportunity Softcat has given us and are overjoyed to continue serving the local community and broaden our services with the construction of this hale,” says Momi Akana, Executive Director of Keiki O Ka Aina.
Keiki O Ka Aina presented the idea to build a large Native Hawaiian hale that will be utilized for traditional classes on hula, weaving, traditional woodworking, Hawaiian language, Hawaiian medicinal plants and more. Softcat’s staff of 41 is traveling from Europe to take part in this momentous endeavor. Their group will work on the hale alongside the KOKA team for two full days, on November 10 and 11. Keiki O Ka Aina will be hosting a celebration after construction on November 11 at 5:30pm to thank Softcat and share the Aloha spirit before their departure.
Supplies have been gathered for over three months, including Loulu (fan palm) thatching material for the hale roof. The posts, roof and lashing will stand erect as the frame and symbol of what laulima (many hands working together) can do with and for the community. Earl Kawaa, director of the hale project, has spearheaded numerous large initiatives for KOKA. He has been instrumental in bringing back the kalo (taro) culture in Hawaii, leading poi board and poi pounder classes at KOKA. His next undertaking for the organization will be to build a genuine Hawaiian canoe.
