Laulima Giving Program
Assisting Underprivileged Families Year Round
The Families of 721 Umi Street were completely devastated when the water from the river next to their apartment building overflowed and poured into their apartments. The water started rising quickly and they had to run out of the building grabbing whatever they could until the storm passed and the water receded. For the owners of these units, the loss was complete. Every piece of clothing, appliances, personal possessions and furniture was destroyed. They are grateful to have gotten out safely, but the cleanup and getting their lives back to normal will be a long hard road.
The families are asking for help with beds, furniture, kitchen goods, appliances (refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and other small appliances) and clothing. Most importantly, because they are owner occupants, donations to help with the cleanup and putting their lives back together again.
Please call us at 843-2502 and ask for Richelle to coordinate any large donations. Drop off donations to Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Center at 3097 Kalihi St. and we will be delivering donations to the families. All monetary donations collected during this time will be fully directed to the families of Umi St. and tax donation receipts will be provided.

The Laulima Giving Program (many hands working together) brings companies and individuals together to help needy families in Hawaii. Keiki O Ka Aina partners with KHON2 to assist struggling and underprivileged families, elderly and individuals including; children with special needs, families affected by incarceration and single parents through donations of goods, cash equivalents, enriching experiences, and advocacy. Over 1,000 individuals were assisted in 2012 alone.
The program’s quarterly campaigns include:
- National Back-to-School Drive
Donations provide students with community support and give teachers the materials to create a fun and meaningful learning environment for their students.
- Adopt-A-Family Holiday
This campaign provides families in need with Christmas presents, food and household goods, as well as monetary donations and gift cards.
- Donation Dollar Vouchers
Each year, KOKA would like to encourage additional banks to participate and support Laulima.
